28) 1769 - Watt Patents First Practical Steam Engine (Scotland)

There is a general misconception about who invented the first steam engine. This was not Watt, but the English military at the end of the 17th century. Their steam engine, however, was not made for practical use. When Watt patented his machine in 1769, it was designed to be used in different machines and for different uses. The most important improvement was to separate condensation of the steam, which allowed the cylinder to be kept hot.
